Kontron’s Computer-on-Module Products Are Getting New Names!


With the latest revision of the COM Express® specification, the PCI Industrial Manufacturers Group (PICMG) will incorporated the new "mini" form factor into the standard. This form factor covers the modules that we previously classified under the provisional product description "nanoETXexpress." As a result, Kontron's three groups of COM Express® modules will all officially comply with the COM Express® specification. For us, this represents a major milestone in our consistent, standards-based product strategy.

We’d like to take this opportunity to simplify things for our customers by renaming our COM Express® products accordingly: In the future, "COME-xXX#" is going to serve as the central identifier in our product names, followed by all the key information our customers are used to receiving, i.e., easy identification of the form factor, processor, chipset, and pin-out. All of these details will be available at a glance:

Naming for COM Express Products

This success story began with Kontron's pioneering work in the field of small form factor modules. Back in 2004, Kontron was the first manufacturer to launch a module that complies with today’s COM Express "basic" form factor. This was followed in 2006 by modules that meet today’s COM Express "compact" standard. The last member of our COM Express® trio, the nanoETXexpress, was launched in 2008. It is the module with the smallest form factor to date – the one that is now officially classified as the COM Express "mini"-formfactor. Throughout the revision and naming process by PICMG – with COM Express® basic and extended form factors being introduced in 2005, COM Express® compact in 2010, and COM Express® mini in 2012 – our modules have served as the foundation for the official specification and have been the first examples of its implementation.

Kontron is proud of this fact and elected to use this opportunity to rename our COM Express® portfolio to make it more easily recognized as being in line with the official COM Express® standard naming conventions.
